Monochrome Color Palettes with HEX Codes

A monochrome palette builds hierarchy from one hue family or a neutral scale. Its strength is consistency; its risk is that nearby tones can become too similar when used for text, borders, selected states, or adjacent data categories.

How to build with monochrome palettes

Plan the scale from light to dark before assigning roles. Wider lightness differences are usually more useful for UI structure than adding many almost-identical steps, and an accent outside the family is optional rather than required.

Ink Scale

#000000#333333#666666#999999#FFFFFF

A pure neutral ramp is straightforward for typography and structure: use the endpoints for strong foreground/background roles and intermediate grays for surfaces, borders, or secondary text only after testing.

Blue Mono

#03045E#023E8A#0077B6#48CAE4#CAF0F8

The deep navy through cyan range works as a single-hue product scale. It can support ordered states or surfaces, but adjacent middle blues may be too close for categorical distinctions.

Sage Mono

#132A13#31572C#4F772D#90A955#ECF39E

The olive/sage progression has a natural, muted character. The light endpoint provides a soft surface while #132A13 gives the family enough depth for structure.

Assign colors to real roles

RolePractical direction
Light endpointBackgrounds and subtle surfaces.
Middle stepsBorders, selected states, charts with ordered intensity, or secondary surfaces.
Dark endpointText, navigation, or strong structural elements.
Optional accentUse only when a task requires a distinction the monochrome scale cannot communicate clearly.

Good use cases

  • Design systems that need a disciplined neutral or single-hue scale.
  • Data visualizations showing ordered intensity rather than unrelated categories.
  • Brands seeking consistency across surfaces without managing many independent hues.
